You can broadly classify Oracle database into 2 types
OLTP: Online Transaction Processing. This needs to be available 24x7, heavy transaction volume.
DSS: Decision Support Systems, also called as OLAP Online Analytical Processing. Mostly for large Data Warehouse. Doesn't need to be available all the time.Because of extreme size, special techniques should be used to load and use data.This uses different optimization stratergies for queries and data storage
